Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhtar‘s Superboys of Malegaon made it to the big screens today. On the occasion, Zoya dropped a post dedicated to the original creative minds Nasir Shaikh and Shafique Shaikh on Instagram. Taking a trip down memory lane, she recalled her encounter with them at the Osian Film Festival in Delhi and expressed gratitude for sharing their life stories with her, Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani.
Sharing a series of throwback photos from the Film Festival in 2009, Zoya Akhtar wrote, “Where it all Began. Nasir, Shafique, Farhan and Me. Osian Film Festival. Delhi. 2009. Shaikh Nasir, Thank You for trusting Farhan Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani and me with your life story, for sharing your heart with Varun Grover and for waiting all this time so Reema Kagti could tell it like only she can. For Farogh and Shafique.”
The photos showed Farhan Akhtar with Nasir Shaikh and Shafique Shaikh, posing for an endearing frame. Another one captured a candid moment between Zoya and the Shaikh brothers. Shibani Dandekar commented on the photo, writing, “Wow what an incredible journey and what a beautiful film.” Gourav Adarsh also reacted as he penned, “Woah,” followed by a heart emoji. Shweta Bachchan also dropped a red heart emoji in the comment section.
As Superboys of Malegaon released today, filmmaker Farhan Akhtar too reminisced about his encounter with Nasir Shaikh and Shafique Shaikh. Reflecting on their journey and contributions to independent cinema, he expressed, “As ‘Superboys of Malegaon’ releases today in theatres, couldn’t help but look back to the time our paths crossed with the OG Malegaon boys, Nasir and Shafique, in the year 2009. It was at the Osian film festival, Delhi and it was here that the seed of what has grown to become the film was planted. It’s been a long journey and one can only be grateful to all the people who provided sunshine and rain to make it possible.”

The film honours Nasir and Shafique’s legacy, acknowledging their filmmaking efforts which inspired generations of storytellers. Zoya Akhtar, Farhan Akhtar, Reema Kagti and Ritesh Sidhwani joined hands to promote the film.
