Yoga event held at Meghalaya’s living root bridge

GUWAHATI:

The North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homoeopathy (NEIAH) organised a “one of a kind” yoga event at Meghalaya’s double-decker living root bridge on Monday (March 24, 2025) as part of the countdown to the International Day of Yoga 2025.

The institute called the event a fusion of tradition, nature and well-being, with yoga mats unrolled at one of “India’s most astonishing” natural marvels, a contender for the UNESCO World Heritage tag.

The living root bridge, underlining Khasi craftsmanship, is woven from the aerial roots of rubber fig trees, creating a living, breathing pathway that grows stronger with time. Locals use such root bridges to cross hill streams or gorges.

“This wasn’t just another yoga event for the participants. It was a testament to resilience and harmony — both of nature and the human spirit as yoga embodies patience, strength, and balance, much like the root bridge,” a statement from the NEIAH said.

“By hosting the event on the living root bridge at the Nongriat village, the message was clear. Yoga is not confined to studios; it belongs to the world, to nature, and every individual seeking balance and well-being,” the institute said.

The United Nations declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2014. Since then, India has redefined how the world experiences yoga by hosting sessions at some of the country’s most iconic landmarks, including the Taj Mahal, the Konark Sun Temple, the Gateway of India, and the Red Fort.
