Yadgir CMC chairperson warns of legal action against educational institutions for not paying tax

Chairperson of the Yadgir City Municipal Council Kumari Lalita Anapur has warned of strict legal action against educational institutions for not paying taxes due to the CMC.

She was addressing a meeting held for the administrators of educational institutions in Yadgir recently.

“The CMC has found many buildings that were constructed by educational institutions by violating norms. Some educational institutions even occupied garden spaces for the construction of the building. The CMC has now decided to take action against such institutions. Also, there are some institutions that have not paid taxes for a long period,” Ms. Anapur said and added that approximately ₹6 crore tax is due.

“Notices have been served on institutions asking them to pay taxes. Only a few institutions have come forward to pay. If such a tendency continued, the CMC will take strict legal action against them,” she said.

The CMC has taken the initiative to give building permissions without any delay. Therefore, institutions should henceforth get permission and construct buildings as per norms, Ms. Anapur said and added that the CMC was expecting cooperation from educational institutions with regard to paying taxes. If taxes are paid, the CMC will be able to pay the salary of employees and take up development works in the city.

CMC Commissioner Umesh Chawan said that a discount would be given to those who are eligible. Complete tax due to the CMC should be paid if buildings have been constructed by violating norms,” he said.

Assistant Executive Engineer Rajanikanth said a majority of the institutions have not taken permission before constructing school and college buildings. The CMC has powers to take action against them as per the guidelines issued by the State government.

Vice-Chairpersons of the CMC Rukiya Begam and others were present.
