Heartstopper, based on Alice Oseman’s beloved LGBTQ+ comic series, has captured the hearts of viewers with its first three seasons. The show, which premiered in 2022, follows the journey of Charlie, played by Joe Locke, and Kit Connor’s character Nick, as their friendship turns into romance. Season 3 was the most intense yet, as it showed challenges in Charlie and Nick’s relationship and ended without a clear conclusion, which left fans asking for more. Despite the buzz, Netflix is yet to officially renew Heartstopper for another season and recently, the streaming giant shared its latest What We Watched report. The bi-annual Engagement Report sheds light on the series’ popularity.
According to Deadline, Season 3 garnered 10.9 million views since its release on October 3 until the end of 2024. It ranked 130 between June and December, all while staying in the global Top 10 for two weeks, where it took 4th position. On the other hand, Season 2, released in August 2023, had 16.5 million views in the second half of that year. It ranked 59 and appeared at number 2 in the weekly Top 10. During the same period, Season 3 had almost 11.6 million views, which is a 30% drop from Season 2. Despite the drop in viewership, the outlet calls it “respectable numbers.”
Alice Oseman has confirmed that she is discussing the future with Netflix and the production company to decide how to move forward. Last week, she said during an event, “I’m working very hard behind the scenes to get us a renewal for Heartstopper. We’re feeling optimistic, we’re feeling hopeful, and hopefully we’ll be able to share some news about that sometime soon. Fingers crossed,” as quoted by Deadline.
In an earlier interview with Tudum during the release of season 2, Alice shared her thoughts about the show’s future, saying that “there is more story in the books that we have yet to cover, and we would love to tell the end of the story in TV form.” She said, “As much as I, and everyone else, want the final installment to come to the screen as soon as possible, there are a lot of moving parts to account for that make it hard to solidify anything.”
Heartstopper Season 3 was based on Volume 4 and Volume 5 of the book series. A sixth and final book is also on the way.
