Being a part of the film family comes with its own set of challenges. For Abhay Deol, it was the biases that he had to face given his lineage. The actor, who hails from the illustrious Deol clan, recently admitted to experiencing situations that someone from a non-famous background would never have to. Speaking about the same, in interaction with Humans of Bombay, Abhay recently took a trip down memory lane to recall when a teacher used to insult him in class simply because he came from a privileged family.
Reflecting on his school days, Abhay Deol shared that personal questions about his family’s public image were frequently asked. While some teachers would treat him favourably based on their admiration for his family, others would judge them. The actor said, “I never knew what to expect—either some were overly favourable, or they were extremely harsh because they saw me as privileged and undeserving of that privilege.”
To support his statement, he cited an example of a tuition teacher who would repeatedly humiliate him in front of classmates, making public remarks about his family because she didn’t like them. Abhay shared, “She would publicly humiliate me, passing comments about my family, and if something was in the news, she would say it loudly in class, like, ‘You people do this.’ As a kid, you get shocked and internalise these things because you can’t speak out. As an adult, I feel she was a very troubled person to insult a child and his family in front of the class. It wasn’t even in a regular class—it was in tuition. My friends kept quiet because of how harshly she spoke about my family.”
Up next, Abhay Deol will be seen in the film Bun Tikki. Directed by Faraz Arif Ansari, the film also features Shabana Azmi, Zeenat Aman, and Anjali Anand in key roles. It is produced by Jyoti Deshpande, Dinesh Malhotra and Marijke Desouza under the banner of Manish Malhotra’s Stage 5 Productions. In other news, his film Road, Movie, is all set to re-release in theatres. The actor announced the same on Instagram through a post. The 2010 release also stars Tannishtha Chatterjee and late Satish Kaushik in the lead roles.
