The BJP’s victory in tiny Delhi, which is not even a full state, was fueled by support from all quarters across the city. The election campaign was informed by rhetoric around communitarian identities.The election mandate also had important lessons to give on the issue of freebies or politics based on freebies with every party promising them. It showed that freebies once announced cannot be rolled back as they are seen as a right by beneficiaries but also that track record in delivering freebies is also taken on board by the voters. Also, for the first time in Indian politics, politics of the city or an urban escape became a contributing factor.
