Fans watching Sunday’s Super Bowl were in for a surprise as Dunkin’ unveiled the latest installment in its expanding Dunkin’ Cinematic Universe. Instead of a typical 30- or 60-second ad, viewers were treated to a full seven-minute short film, DunKings 2: The Movie, packed with comedy, Boston pride, and, of course, plenty of Dunkin’. A 60-second teaser aired during the first commercial break, offering just a glimpse of what was to follow. This time, Ben Affleck returns as the beloved DunKing, joined by an exciting lineup of Boston icons.
The clip is packed with hometown heavyweights, including his brother Casey Affleck, Succession star Jeremy Strong, NFL coaching legend Bill Belichick (joined by girlfriend Jordon Hudson) and pop culture fixtures Donnie Wahlberg, Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes.
The film kicks off outside Casey Affleck’s dressing room, where Ben is in full recruitment mode, trying to convince his younger brother to join Java Jam: Battle of the Coffee Brand Bands. For those who recall last year’s ad, Ben’s DunKing persona first took shape when he took on a pop star dream alongside Matt Damon, Tom Brady, Jennifer Lopez, Jack Harlow and Fat Joe. This year, the dream is still alive, only now, the stakes are higher. Once Casey is on board, the team heads straight to the battleground: a convention-style showdown where coffee-themed bands duke it out for the ultimate prize – a brand-new coffee cup trophy. Helping to bring the nerdy, fan-fueled energy to life are Smith and Mewes, stepping back into their iconic Jay and Silent Bob roles.
The Afflecks soon rope in Jeremy Strong, though his commitment to the cause takes a rather intense turn. In a scene that first debuted as a teaser during the Grammy Awards, Strong, ever the method actor, fully immerses himself in the coffee experience, literally. Covered in beans and brown liquid, he passionately declares, “Dunkin’ is Boston. Boston is Paul Revere.” With this revelation, he devises a strategy to lead the DunKings to victory, by embodying Revere himself, complete with period-accurate attire.
As Strong embraces his revolutionary role, the DunKings encounter their competition: a trio of rival groups, including the Drip Squad, fronted by comedian and actor Druski, the Burger Chain Gang and the Barista Buds. The teams exchange witty jabs before Strong dramatically storms in, fully committed to his Revere persona, bellowing, “America Runneth on Dunkin’!” What follows is an unexpected truce, leading to a brand-new Dunkin’ promo: the DunKings $6 meal deal, available at Dunkin’ locations nationwide. But the surprises don’t end there—Dunkin’ has also launched a special merch line featuring Juicy Couture tracksuits (DunKings for him, DunQueens for her), tumblers, reusable straws and more, all shown in the film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter (THR), landing the first commercial break of the Super Bowl is a major score, considering the viewership has consistently topped 100 million for over 15 years. But even securing any Super Bowl ad slot is a power move, with companies vying for the massive audience drawn in by both the game and the high-profile commercials. As always, Hollywood came to play, with this year’s lineup of celebrity-studded ads including appearances from Matt Damon, David Beckham, Matthew McConaughey, Kevin Bacon, Greta Gerwig, Charli XCX, Martha Stewart, Willem Dafoe, Catherine O’Hara, Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan.
With DunKings 2: The Movie, Ben Affleck and Dunkin’ have once again redefined what a Super Bowl ad can be.
