Renowned Telugu actress Chittajallu Krishnaveni, a prominent figure in the golden era of Telugu cinema, has passed away at the age of 100 due to age-related ailments. The veteran actress breathed her last at her residence on Sunday, February 16, leaving behind a legacy that spanned several decades.
Krishnaveni was widely respected for her versatile performances and dedication to Telugu cinema. Over the years, she played a pivotal role in shaping the industry, working in several landmark films that continue to be remembered by cinephiles.
Krishnaveni began her journey in the film industry as a child artist in Sati Anasuya – Dhruvavijayam (1936), where she portrayed the character of Anasuya. Over time, she transitioned into a lead actress and singer. As reported by Sakshi Post, Krishnaveni later married a Mirzapuram landlord, who was also a filmmaker and the head of Shobhanachala Studios. Over time, she took on the responsibility of managing the studio and ventured into film production. Her illustrious career spanned over eight decades, during which she featured in notable films such as Sati Anasuya, Daksha Yajna, Bhoja-Kalidasa, Jeevanjyothi, Tukaram, Kacha Devayani, and Manadesam.
Krishnaveni created history by lending her voice to Jo Achyutananda Jojo Mukunda, marking the first-ever rendition of an Annamayya Keerthana on the Telugu silver screen. Even before India’s independence, she showcased her artistic prowess by performing Bhupathi Champithin in Gollabhama.
As a producer, Krishnaveni played a pivotal role in shaping Telugu cinema by introducing legendary actor N. T. Rama Rao in Manadesam (1949). The film also marked the debut of renowned composer Ghantasala as a music director. Beyond that, she was instrumental in launching talents like music director Ramesh Naidu and singer P. Leela. Her influence extended to the next generation as well, guiding her daughter, N. R. Anuradha, into film production.
