Vanniyar Federation members, headed by founder-president C.N. Ramamurthy, and Tamilaga Valvurimai Katchi founder T. Velmurugan on Wednesday met Chief Minister M.K. Stalin at the DMK headquarters and thanked him for constructing memorials to 21 persons who died in police firing, while demanding a separate quota for Vanniyars in the 1980s.

A release said that after the 1987 struggle, former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi created a separate quota for Most Backward Classes in 1989, and implemented 20% reservation in education and employment. In 2021, Mr. Stalin announced that the memorials would be built.
