Shah Rukh Khan and Malaika Arora’s song Chaiyya Chaiyya is a timeless classic. Even today fans cannot help but groove to its catchy tune. The song is from Dil Se’s album which features some of the chartbusters of that era, but Chaiyya Chaiyya remains iconic owing to Shah Rukh Khan and Malaika Arora flawless performance and Sapna Awasthi’s voice. In a recent interview with Bollywood Thikana, the singer shared how she got the song and even credited Shah Rukh Khan for her success.
Speaking about how she got the opportunity to sing Chaiyya Chaiyya, Sapna Awasthi shared, “I am thankful to A.R. Rahman and Gulzar ji for giving me such a big hit song, something I could have never imagined. I also want to thank Shah Rukh and Malaika Arora for making this song such a huge success.” She also revealed that when she first received a call from A.R. Rahman’s manager, she assumed it was a joke. But, she went to the studio, just to see her wish come true. She stated that she was not given any specific instructions for the song and was unaware that it was being recorded with SRK and Malaika. She recalls singing the song in half an hour and being told that it would only be kept if AR Rahman and Gulzar approved of it.
Moving forward, Sapna had a chance to sing other Shah Rukh Khan songs. Talking about his support and others in the industry, Sapna said, “Shah Rukh Khan has been very lucky for me. Unke gaane gaake toh humari life chal rahi hai. Nadeem bhai ki composition, Rahman saab ke gaane, sabka bada support raha hai mere career mein. Sabne mere gale ke hisaab se gaane banaaye aur mujhe gaane diye and the public made them hits (Singing his songs is what has kept our lives together. Everyone has contributed significantly to my profession, including Nadeem bhai’s compositions and Rahman saab’s music. They made songs that matched my voice).”
Sapna Awasthi has worked as a Bollywood playback singer for years and is widely known for famous songs such as Banno Teri Ankhiyan Soorme (Dushmani), Pardesi Pardesi (Raja Hindustani), Chaiyya Chaiyya (Dil Se..), Angoori Badan (Jaanwar) and UP Bihar Lootne (Shool).
