University organises walkathon to create awareness on cancer

Scores of students and teachers participated in a walkathon organised by GM University for creating awareness on cancer in Davangere on Tuesday.

Students from the university took part in the walkathon organised in association with Vishwaradhya Cancer Hospital and walked from Moti Veerappa School Ground to Jayadeva Circle holding banners and placards highlighting the need for awareness on cancer.

They held placards highlighting the dangers of smoking and consuming other tobacco products and appealed to people to stay away from such bad habits.

Several other educational institutions and healthcare institutions too took part in the walkathon.

At a public meeting at Jayadeva Circle, Pro Vice-Chancellor of GM University H.D. Maheshappa expressed concern about the increase in the number of cancer cases in rural areas. He said that lack of awareness is the reason for this development.

He said that only through proper education, awareness and extending the requisite healthcare, cancer can be tackled.

On the occasion, some students staged a street play on cancer.

Registrar of GM University Prof. Sunil Kumar B.S., mangement representative Y.U. Subhashchandra, principal of pharmacy college Girish Bolakatti, doctors Ajay and Amith from Vishwaradhya Cancer Hospital and others were present.
