The Civil Supplies CID police seized two tonnes of rice meant for supply under the Public Distribution System near Vaniyambadi town here on Friday.
The police said, based on the orders of Collector K. Tharpagaraj, special police teams were formed to prevent PDS rice smuggling in the district. During a surprise vehicle inspection on Chennai-Bengaluru Highway near Vaniyambadi town, a police team found a lorry parked on the route.
On searching the vehicle, the team found a large consignment of PDS rice hidden under saw wood dust.
The Vaniyambadi Taluk police registered a case and seized the lorry. They handed over the consignment to the officials of Civil Supplies.
