The Thiruvananthapuram Additional District and Sessions Court V on Friday sentenced two people to rigorous imprisonment for life for the murder of a woman 14 years ago.

Judge Siju Sheik found Rajesh, 42, and Anil Kumar, 49, of Nedumangad, guilty of the crime. The court also imposed fines of ₹1 lakh each on the convicts.

According to the prosecution led by public prosecutor B.S. Rajesh, the duo had attacked the deceased on September 14, 2011. They also attempted to sexually assault her, and went on to severely manhandle her when she resisted their attempts. They also pushed her down a staircase into a canal near Nedumangad municipal parking area. She succumbed to injuries sustained in her stomach, chest and internal organs.

The prosecution relied on circumstantial evidence in the absence of eyewitnesses. Nedumangad police investigated the case.
