Tripura police have arrested four youths who allegedly looted all the fixtures and furniture from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) camp office in the Shyamali Bazaar Quarter Complex area here. The crime was committed over a period of over five months when the office was left unattended by staff.
Police said on Sunday that they had apprehended four youths in connection with the theft of almost all the furnishings in the CBI office. During a visit to the office on February 11, CBI officials discovered that ceiling fans, tables, chairs, an almirah, a plastic water tank and electrical equipment were missing.
The thieves even took away the wooden doors and windows. “They (thieves) looted everything they could find in the office,” stated a police officer from the New Capital Complex Police Station.
He also mentioned that there was no security guard at the CBI camp office. The officer claimed that the arrested youths were drug addicts and that most of the stolen items were recovered after raids based on their confessions.
However, the electrical equipment and wires have not yet been found. The Shyamoli Bazar Quarter Complex, where the CBI office is located, also houses the official residences of top police and civil administration officials.
Even though there have been discussions about establishing a permanent functional office for the CBI in Tripura, currently officials of the investigating agency operate out of the camp office when assigned to any probe in the state.
