This remarkable woman, who began her acting career at a tender age, remained dedicated to cinema until her final breath.
The esteemed actress Manorama, affectionately known as “Aachi”, holds a revered position in the annals of South Indian cinema. Her unparalleled talent in character roles remains unmatched, solidifying her legacy as an irreplaceable icon. Even today, her contribution to the industry remains unparalleled.
Manorama, who acted in more than 1,500 films and 5,000 plays and earned a place in the Guinness World Records, celebrated her ‘Golden Jubilee’. This marked 50 years of acting, during which she made her name famous in theatre, television, and film.
Tamil Nadu’s ‘Comedy Queen’, Manorama, brought laughter to many, but her personal life was far from happy. Tragedy struck her at a very young age. At just 11, she had to leave school due to her mother’s illness and was forced to work as a maid. However, at the age of 12, Manorama began acting in films, a career that continued until 2013.
Gopi Shanta, known by her stage name Manorama, had a challenging upbringing, raised solely by her mother. Before venturing into the world of cinema, she honed her acting skills performing in stage plays. During this period, she fell in love with SM Ramanathan, the head of her drama company, and they decided to marry. This decision, however, went against her mother’s wishes, leading Manorama to leave home.
Manorama embarked on married life and soon gave birth to her first child. However, her happiness was short-lived. Her husband, S.M. Ramanathan, abandoned his wife and child a mere 11 days after the birth.
The reason for his departure was highly peculiar. It has been reported that upon the child’s birth, an astrologer declared it a danger to S.M. Ramanathan’s life, prompting him to leave Manorama and the child. Manorama’s father also subsequently abandoned the family.
Despite a tumultuous personal life, Manorama achieved significant success in the film industry. Notably, she is the only actress to have worked alongside five South Indian Chief Ministers.
Former Tamil Nadu Chief Ministers Annadurai and Karunanidhi shared the stage with Manorama during her illustrious theatre career. Beyond her stage performances, she graced the silver screen alongside prominent figures like Jayalalithaa and M.G.R. in Tamil cinema and N.T. Rama Rao in Telugu films.
Despite her remarkable achievements, Manorama harboured an unfulfilled ambition: to portray a transgender character. Sadly, this aspiration remained unfulfilled throughout her lifetime.
Manorama’s journey in the spotlight concluded in 2013 when her health declined. Her condition deteriorated progressively, ultimately leading to her passing in 2015. Even today, her legacy as a unique and irreplaceable star endures.
