Talat Mahmood, the legendary playback singer known for his soulful film songs and ghazals, may soon have his life story brought to the big screen. Sahar Zaman, the singer’s grand-niece and author of Talat Mahmood: The Definitive Biography, recently expressed her wish for a biopic on the iconic artist. She also hopes that a leading filmmaker takes on the project and a fitting actor is cast to portray Mahmood’s remarkable journey.

During a session last week discussing his biography, Zaman spoke about the need to honor musical legends. As reported by PTI, she voiced her desire for a biopic to be made celebrating Mahmood’s 101st birth anniversary this year.

“There should be initiatives by state governments to commemorate personalities like Talat Mahmood, Raj Kapoor and others in their centenary years. I hope a biopic is made on his life, tracing his journey across three cities—Lucknow, Kolkata and Mumbai,” she told PTI.

She stated that she would be thrilled if a filmmaker such as Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed the biopic. “He is one of those filmmakers who can frame the vastness, keeping in mind the detailing required to recapture that era spanning over three cities,” she noted. Sahar Zaman also stated that she hoped for Ranbir Kapoor to play the role of Talat Mahmood. She also noted that Talat’s music was also influenced by the political and social situations in the country.

The legendary singer also appeared in 13 films between 1945 and 1958. He was born in Lucknow on February 24, 1924 and died on May 9, 1998, in Mumbai. He also worked in the Kolkata cinema business for a few years during its peak in the early 1940s. Talat Mahmood sang in 16 regional languages, including Bengali, Assamese, Marathi, Sindhi, Malayalam and Telugu and offered his voice to over 800 songs, earning the affection and adoration of billions of fans. Talat Mahmood was awarded the Padma Bhushan award in 1992, to honour artistic accomplishments in the fields of cinema and ghazals.
