Tamil Nadu, which contributes a 38% share to India’s footwear and leather products output and accounts for 47% of India’s total leather export, is set to benefit from the Union Budget 2025-26 announcements for the sector.
The Budget proposed to implement a focus product scheme to enhance the productivity, quality, and competitiveness of India’s footwear and leather sector.
The scheme would support design capacity, component manufacturing, and machinery required for production of non-leather quality footwear, along with leather footwear and products, it said.
R. Selvam, Executive Director, Council for Leather Exports, pointed out that the 20% export duty on crust leather, apart from the 10% import duty on wet blue leather, had been removed.
This would strengthen the tanning industry and significantly promote exports of value-added products from the country, he said.
