Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday (April 6, 2025) said weakening the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would mean putting up hurdles on the path to make India a world leader.
Addressing party workers on the BJP’s 46th foundation day, he attributed the party’s consistent growth to being free from family-oriented politics.
“We must remember that weakening the BJP does not mean weakening an individual but an ideology and our national pride. It means creating hurdles on the path to take India to the world stage,” he said.
Mr. Sarma said different people would try to weaken the BJP as it kept marching ahead. This, he felt, could be countered by becoming technologically strong to take the positive things forward to the people.
“Social media could be one of the biggest mediums for this,” he said.
He asserted that the BJP would remain a party of workers and not transform into a family-oriented entity. “The party has been resolute about not letting dynastic politics in since its birth 45 years ago,” he said, taking a swipe at the Nehru-Gandhi family.
“Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi transformed Congress into a family-run party. Atal Behari Vajpayee-ji, L.K. Advani-ji, Narendra Modi-ji, and Amit Shah-ji could have made the BJP a family-dominated party if they wanted to, but the BJP will never tread this path,” Mr. Sarma said.
He credited the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh for inspiring the BJP to dedicate itself to the service of the nation.
The Chief Minister also said 70% of India’s population had been reaping the benefits of good governance in 21 BJP or NDA (National Democratic Alliance)-ruled States. The performance had helped the BJP become the world’s most popular party, bigger than the Communist Party of China in terms of membership.
He insisted the northeastern States would not have developed without the BJP to shower attention on them.
“Similarly, the Ram temple [in Ayodhya] would not have been built, Section 370 would not have been abolished from Kashmir, and minority women would not have got justice from triple talaq,” he said.
