Although Shahid found the scenes funny, he later realized their significance after the film’s release.
Shahid Kapoor will next be seen in Deva.
Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao’s film, Vivah, is one of the most iconic works in their filmography. However, while shooting the film, Shahid Kapoor wasn’t aware of how arranged marriages are set up and found the scenes strange. He spoke to director Sooraj Barjatya and decided to trust his vision, only later realising the significance of the scenes.
Shahid Kapoor told SCREEN, “Vivah was my practice session. The same happened with me in real life, I never thought this would happen. When I was shooting for this film, I used to say to my friends, ‘How can anyone have an arranged marriage? It’s so strange.’ So, I used to find the scenes also very funny – voh chai lekar aarahi hai and then bolti hai jal.”
He added, “I was like, Sooraj ji, ‘What’s jal, man? He said, ‘You just do it, you don’t know how people function in the interiors in India… We just followed him. I had no idea what was happening or about the world of this film, I was very much a big-city kid. Only after it did what it did, I realised that this actually happens. I also realised it around ten years later.”
Shahid Kapoor married Mira Rajput in 2015. Shahid and Mira’s marriage was arranged by their families. When asked if he believes in arranged marriages now, the actor replied, “I endorse arranged marriages a lot. I think it worked really well for me and Mira. I never thought at a young age that I would ever do an arranged marriage.”
While Shahid liked Mira from their very first meeting, it took Mira about six months to agree to the marriage. Despite their 13-year age difference, the couple has built a beautiful life together. Shahid and Mira welcomed their first child, Misha, in 2016, and their son, Zain, followed in 2018. The couple often shares glimpses of their family life on social media, giving fans major relationship goals with their candid posts and public appearances.
