
Several protesters and policemen were injured during an agitation against the Waqf (Amendment) Act in Kailashahar, the headquarters of the Unakoti district in north Tripura, on Saturday (April 12, 2025). Central forces were deployed in the area after the incident.
Thousands of people took out a march at Kailashahar and Sonamura in Sepahijala district to demand the repeal of the contentious law.
A fire-fighting vehicle was damaged in stone-throwing at a protest venue in Sonamura. None was injured in the incident.
Tension broke out in Kailashahar after protesters clashed with the police. Several protesters and security personnel were injured, but not seriously.
The police lobbed teargas shells to disperse the protesters. Northern Range DIG Rati Ranjan Debnath and Unakoti district SP Kanta Jahangir rushed to Tilla Bazar, the main trouble spot in Kailashahar, to take stock of the situation.

Police officials said Central forces were deployed in the area as a precautionary measure. The district administration imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita to restrict the movement of people.
Protests against the newly enacted Waqf law have been taking place across the State over the past three days. These are being held under the banner of the ‘Nagorik Committee’ (citizens’ committee), which has the backing of the Opposition CPI(M) and the Congress.
