Sanya Malhotra’s film Mrs, a remake of The Great Indian Kitchen, faced criticism for not crediting the original film. Director Arati Kadav acknowledged and corrected the mistake.

Sanya Malhotra plays the role of Richa in Mrs.

Sanya Malhotra-starrer Mrs was released earlier this week. The film is a remake of the Malayalam cult classic, The Great Indian Kitchen. Earlier, director Vikramaditya Motwane had openly criticised the makers of the fil for failing to properly credit the technicians who contributed to the project. He also criticised the makers for not crediting the original Malayalam film, The Great Indian Kitchen, from which Mrs is inspired.

The film’s director, Arati Kadav, has now acknowledged the ‘lapse’ and said that she was glad Zee5 rectified it immediately. “It was definitely a lapse,” Arati told Hindustan Times, adding, “There were so many players, and it was a genuine mistake. There were 3-4 platforms collaborating on this. When I asked them, they said, ‘It’s a genuine mistake,’ and they immediately corrected it.”

Arati added that she spoke with the crew members. “I have a very, very nice relationship with the crew. They become like a family because we have a very vibrant WhatsApp group. So we were discussing that and I’m happy that the crew is getting their due credit. There are a lot of debutants in my film. For them, it was very important to see their name out there,” she added.

The filmmaker hopes that other platforms and production houses can take lessons from this episode. She said, “A film is about invisible work. So, I think that the mission starts from the trailer itself that you spotlight the crew. This is a tough film to make, almost like a microsurgery, and the crew did it with such love and care. So, I am glad that now their names are back in the slate. I hope that, like we, not all platforms do the same going forward.”

Taking to his official Instagram account on Thursday, January 30, Vikramaditya Motwane had re-shared a post which questioned why the technicians of Mrs were not mentioned in the trailer of the film. “Oh the irony of the producers making a film about someone who toils in the kitchen whilst having artistic dreams and then not crediting the artists themselves. Or the creator of the original film,” the filmmaker wrote.

The creators of Mrs had also not acknowledged in the YouTube description that the film is an adaptation of the Malayala film, The Great Indian Kitchen, which released in 2021. It had won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Film and was also remade in Tamil.

Mrs revolves around Richa (played by Sanya Malhotra) who is a trained dancer. As a housewife after her marriage with Diwakar (played by Nishant Dahiya), she struggles to adjust in her new life. Richa tries her best to juggle between the duties towards his family and trying to keep up with her dream of becoming a dancer.
