Sanitation, health workers at Maha Kumbh to get bonus, other benefits

A day after the 45-day Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj came to an end, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday (February 27, 2025) announced ₹10,000 bonus to sanitation and health workers who worked in the Kumbh.

Mr. Adityanath further said that the State government is going to ensure that from April, a minimum wage of ₹16,000 is provided to the sanitation workers, and the temporary health workers will be given direct bank transfers. All these workers will get a health cover under Ayushman Bharat Yojana.

“Our government will provide ₹10,000 bonus to the sanitation and health workers at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. We will make sure that from April, a minimum wage of ₹16,000 is provided to the sanitation workers, while temporary health workers will be given direct bank transfers and all of them will be linked to the Ayushman Bharat Yojana for health coverage, ensuring better welfare and support,” the Chief Minister said in Prayagraj, while felicitating the sanitation and health workers.

Mr. Adityanath, who also took part in a cleanliness campaign in Prayagraj to mark the conclusion of the Kumbh, said that from April, the U.P. government will establish a dedicated corporation to ensure fair wages. Expressing deep gratitude and appreciation for the sanitation and health workers for their contribution to the Kumbh, held from January 13 to February 26, Mr. Adityanath promised to stand with them in every possible way.

Later, speaking to media persons, Mr. Adityanath said, “Joint efforts of the Union government, its different ministries, and the Uttar Pradesh government under the guidance of respected Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji played a crucial role in making the event a success, ensuring not just its seamless execution but also contributing to the transformation of Prayagraj into a shining smart city.” He added that the event gave new dimensions to Indian traditions on the world stage.

Mr. Adityanath further claimed that the event gave new prospects for tourism in Uttar Pradesh unveiling multiple circuits of spiritual tour. “One such circuit extends from Prayagraj to Kashi via Maa Vindhyavasini Dham. Just as crores of devotees thronged Prayagraj, Maa Vindhyavasini Dham also witnessed a congregation of five to seven lakh people daily during this period. Likewise, Kashi’s Baba Vishwanath Dham saw a daily footfall of 10 to 15 lakh devotees. In 2024 alone, 64 crore pilgrims and tourists visited various religious sites across Uttar Pradesh, including Ayodhya, Varanasi, Mathura, Prayagraj, Chitrakoot, Vindhyachal, Gorakhpur and Naimisharanya,” he said.

He also claimed that in the last 45 days, more than 66 crore pilgrims and tourists visited Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh.
