Bong Joon Ho’s upcoming sci-fi thriller Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson, has been generating significant buzz. The film is set to premiere at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival in February, with its global release scheduled for March 7. In a recent revelation, Robert Pattinson opened up about nearly quitting acting during the COVID-19 pandemic when it disrupted the industry and Hollywood faced widespread strikes from producers, writers, and other celebrities.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Robert Pattinson said, “It’s strange because the last few years for the film industry, starting with COVID and then the strikes, everyone was constantly saying cinema is dying. And quite convincingly. I was literally almost turned off. It actually started to get a little worrying.” Emphasising his take, Robert Pattinson added, “You can even see in terms of scripts, I mean, every actor for two years was saying, ‘What is happening? Nothing’s cool. Not saying that everything that came out wasn’t cool, but actually, it was very studio.”
Despite his earlier doubts, Robert Pattinson remains optimistic about Hollywood’s future. He expressed excitement about the surge of ambitious films emerging recently, particularly those nominated for the upcoming Oscars. Pattinson believes there’s a new wave of talented directors gaining attention from audiences. He’s hopeful that Mickey 17 will ignite a renewed interest in cinema.
Based on Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel Mickey7, it marks Bong Joon Ho’s first film since his Oscar-winning Parasite in 2019. The sci-fi thriller stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes, a character who embarks on perilous missions deemed too dangerous for ordinary humans. Mickey dies multiple times while striving to control a new world. Alongside Pattinson, the film features an impressive cast including Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo.
Meanwhile, Robert Pattinson will also be seen in The Batman Part II, which is slated to begin shooting this year and be released in October 2027. Furthermore, he will co-star in Lynne Ramsay’s latest film, Die, My Love, with Jennifer Lawrence. He also has A24’s The Drama, with Zendaya in the pipeline. The movie is directed by Kristoffer Borgli.
