Rajesh Khanna, Bollywood’s first superstar, passed away in 2012 at the age of 69. In a recent interview with Avanti Films’ YouTube channel, his alleged girlfriend Anita Advani revealed heartbreaking details about the actor’s final year, describing how he “melted away” both physically and emotionally.
Reflecting on his deteriorating health, Anita shared, “He would cry all day long. It was almost like he was manifesting his own death. He invited it, manifested it.” She admitted to frequently confronting him about his negative outlook, hoping to uplift his spirits.
According to Anita, Khanna had one unfulfilled dream: transforming his iconic bungalow, Aashirvaad, into a museum in his memory. “He had an offer of ₹150 crore for the house when he was unwell, but he refused. He said, ‘I want to turn this into a museum that will stand for 100 years.’” However, after his demise, the house was demolished. Recalling the moment, Anita said, “When the house was demolished, I died along with it.”
Anita also shed light on Khanna’s rekindled bond with his family during his final year. In a 2013 interview with Rediff, she mentioned that his wife, Dimple Kapadia, and daughters, Twinkle and Rinke, began visiting regularly. “They would spend a couple of hours with him. If I was out, they’d call to check when I’d return so they could leave. I was happy they had come back into his life.”
Anju Mahendroo, Khanna’s former girlfriend, also visited occasionally, with Anita noting, “We bonded very well.” Doctors had already warned them that Khanna’s health was rapidly declining. “He had grown very weak, was hallucinating, and often struggled to comprehend things,” Anita recalled somberly.
Rajesh Khanna, fondly known as India’s first superstar, reigned supreme in the late 1960s and 1970s with an unmatched string of 15 consecutive solo hit films—a record that remains unbeaten. Born on December 29, 1942, Khanna made his debut with Aakhri Khat (1966) and soon captured hearts with iconic performances in films like Aradhana, Anand, Kati Patang, and Amar Prem.
