Priyanka Chopra-backed Anuja could make its place in the Oscar nominations. The short film earned a Best Live Action Short Film nomination at the 97th Oscars. The Academy Award ceremony will take place on March 2. Ahead of that, Netflix will be releasing the movie worldwide on February 5. And PeeCee seems to be beyond thrilled about the same development.

Taking to her Instagram handle, Priyanka Chopra shared the official trailer of the short film Anuja and penned a heartfelt note alongside it. The trailer undoubtedly evoked a sense of emotion amongst the audience. It depicts the story of two young girls – one of them a little older and more mature than the other one, set in the backdrop of a slum. The video began with Anuja, a gifted nine-year-old girl, asking her seventeen-year-old sister, Palak, “What is boarding school?” The latter explains, “Boarding school is that place where all smart girls go to study.” But when the younger one asks, “What if I don’t want to be a smart girl?” the elder sister clarifies, “That’s not exactly a choice.”

In another segment of the video, we get to see the elder sister working in a garment factory, while the little girl is facing instances of harassment and more. Both the two sisters go through many hurdles of life, but their bond seems to be of a lifetime. Hinting at what happens to the elder sister after the younger one goes to the boarding school, the latter asks, “But what will happen to you?” and here comes the ending of the 1 minute 18 seconds video, which talked about resilience, love, and opportunity amidst hardship.

Priyanka captioned the video by writing, “I know you’ll be just as moved by Anuja as I was… and I’m beyond thrilled to share that it’s coming to Netflix on Feb 5! The film has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film.”

She then talked about the powerful acting by the two youngsters and continued, “Watching Sajda and Ananya bring this powerful tale to life is an experience. Their performances are raw, honest, and utterly captivating. Anuja is more than just a film – it’s a testament to the unbreakable bonds of sisterhood, the resilience of the human spirit, and the hope that carries us through even the darkest times. Don’t miss it!”

Crafted by Adam J Graves and his wife, Suchitra Mattai, Anuja has been backed by a remarkable team of producers. The list includes Suchitra Mattai, Guneet Monga Kapoor, Krushan Naik, Devananda Graves, Michael Graves, Mindy Kaling, Aaron Kopp, Ksheetij Saini and Alexandra Blaney. Anita Bhatia and Priyanka Chopra are also on board as Executive Producers.
