The Cherthala police on Wednesday exhumed the body of a 48-year-old woman from the cemetery of St. Mary’s Forane Church, Muttom, for post-mortem following allegations that she had succumbed to the injuries caused by her husband’s attack.

The deceased has been identified as V. Saji, a resident of Cherthala municipality. She died while undergoing treatment at a hospital on February 9. The police exhumed the body after registering a case of unnatural death following a complaint filed by the couple’s daughter.

According to the complaint, Saji sustained serious injuries, including head trauma, after being brutally attacked by her husband Sony at their house in the second week of January. The police have reportedly taken him into custody.

Sony allegedly grabbed Saji by the neck, slammed her head against the wall and pushed her to the floor inside the house. The police said the family initially told doctors that she had sustained injuries from falling down the stairs.

“The woman died after undergoing treatment for a month. Based on the complaint, we exhumed the body and the post-mortem will be held on Thursday. Further action will be taken based on the post-mortem report. As of now, no arrest has been made,” said a police officer.
