Playback singer Papon, known for soulful hits like Bulleya, Jiyein Kyun, and Moh Moh Ke Dhaage, has been a part of the music industry for over two decades. In a recent interview, he shared his thoughts on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on music.
Papon firmly believes that no matter how advanced AI gets, it can never replicate the raw, organic essence of traditional music. Recalling a personal experience, he revealed an instance where his voice was cloned using AI, yet it failed to capture the originality and soul of his real voice.
Speaking to ETimes, he said, “Someone once sent me an audio clip of a song sung in my voice. I was confused because I had never recorded that song. At first, I thought maybe I had sung a cover and forgotten about it. But it turned out to be an AI-generated version of my voice.”
The singer expressed concern over the growing influence of AI in music, stating that while artists may feel powerless to stop it, its presence on the internet makes it nearly impossible to control.
He added, “But I think it won’t be possible beyond the point to create things. You cannot create and release a whole movie of an actor. You cannot make a live concert happen for me. I’m sure that will not be allowed.” He emphasizes the need to have some law to protect the artist’s interest. One cannot release the artist’s entire song without his or her authorization.
Furthermore, talking about how we cannot ignore AI in all sectors, Papon stated people should consider making efforts to protect artists against AI. While it assists in a variety of tasks, if it eclipses human creations, people will miss the soul and return to humanity. He noted, “ AI cannot replicate the ethos and emotions of a human artist.”
Meanwhile, on Valentine’s Day, Papon gave a memorable performance at Major Dhyan Chand Stadium, capturing the audience’s hearts with his passionate voice and enchanting stage presence.
