Puducherry-born Thavil exponent P. Datchanamoorthy is among the recipients of the Padma Shri awards announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Saturday (January 25, 2025).

The 68-year-old Thavil artist was born in Abhishekapakkam in Ariyankuppam Commune Panchayat. Coming from a family of Thavil artists, Mr. Datchanamoorthy started learning Thavil at the age of 15 and has performed in over 15,000 events across the country. His techniques have been widely adopted, reflecting practical applicability and effectiveness of his methods.
He has won several awards, including Puduvai Kalaimamani Award in the year 2006-07.
