Nicolas Cage is facing a lawsuit from his ex-partner Christina Fulton, nearly a year after their son, Weston Coppola Cage, allegedly assaulted her which she at the time had claimed that he was going through a “mental-health crisis.” Fulton accused Cage of neglecting their son’s long-standing mental health issues and enabling his behaviour ahead of the incident, according to the court documents obtained by People magazine.
The incident took place on April 28, 2024, when Fulton claims Weston attacked her during a heated argument in his condo building’s elevator, lobby and parking lot. The assault left her with severe injuries.
In July 2024, Weston was arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon but was later released on bond. After his arrest, Fulton described the incident as a “brutal assault” and stressed that it is “imperative” for Weston to “receive the help he desperately needs.”
In her lawsuit, Fulton claims that despite knowing Weston’s history of violent outbursts, substance abuse and psychological struggles, Cage failed to take preventive measures.
“Weston has a long history of mental and psychological disorder and a history of committing violent assault and battery and harming numerous individuals. Nicolas has been aware of Weston’s history and nevertheless failed to take action to prevent Weston from committing acts of violence and harming others,” the lawsuit stated.
Fulton alleges that Cage not only ignored Weston’s mental health needs but also financially supported his reckless lifestyle. She claims Cage paid for Weston’s downtown Los Angeles condo which is located next to his condo. She claimed that he regularly drank alcohol with Weston “despite knowing his substance abuse history.”
As per the report, the lawsuit also mentions that Cage has bailed Weston out of jail several times and did not ensure he received “necessary psychiatric” care.
The alleged attack left Fulton with severe injuries including a brain concussion, eye damage, dental trauma, multiple contusions and PTSD. She stated it further affected her professional life where she had to stop filming a Netflix series and skip brand promotion events.
Fulton is suing Weston for assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligent infliction of emotional distress and Cage for negligent supervision and negligent undertaking. She is also suing Cage and Weston for negligence.
Cage’s legal team dismissed the lawsuit and called the claims “absurd and frivolous.” “Weston Coppola is a 34-year-old man. Mr Cage does not control Weston’s behaviour in any manner and is not responsible for Weston’s alleged assault of his mother,” Cage’s lawyer said.
Weston’s lawyer, Michael A. Goldstein, also criticised the lawsuit and labelled it a “money grab.”
“We will deal with this appropriately, and in a courtroom,” he added.
