Jisoo, a member of the South Korean girl group BLACKPINK, is set to appear in a new series titled Newtopia. While the pop star previously worked in the K-drama Snowdrop, Newtopia’s director, Yoon Sung-hyun, revealed that he was initially worried about Jisoo’s acting skills. The concern came from the fact that Jisoo did not sign up for any projects after the 2021 romance drama Snowdrop. However, Yoon Sung-hyun’s apprehension washed away after witnessing Jisoo’s hard work and dedication. The director shared his experience of working with the K-pop idol during a press conference held on Monday, February 3.

At the press conference, Yoon Sung-hyun admitted that working with Jisoo was a cakewalk, reported All K-pop. “Since she hadn’t acted since Snowdrop, I initially wondered, ‘Will she be okay?’ Unlike actors who work continuously, she took a break,” confessed the director before lauding Jisoo’s commitment to the project.

According to Yoon Sung-hyu, Jisoo devoted four days per week to reading the script and “worked tirelessly”. Unsurprisingly, when the shooting schedule kickstarted “she was fully prepared.”

Yoon Sung-hyun heaped praise on Jisoo’s performance in Newtopia, claiming that he was “lucky” to work with her. The director emphasised that while viewers might not realise her character’s potential in the first couple of episodes, later on, they would feel like only Jisoo could have played the role.

“The character has an underlying sense of humour, and Jisoo herself is incredibly humorous. That is why I wanted to work with her. I consider it a huge relief. She helped me in many ways, both as a person and as an actress,” added Yoon Sung-hyun.

On a concluding note, Yoon Sung-hyun applauded Jisoo for navigating through “intense action scenes with a smile” despite them being physically challenging. “I am truly grateful for that,” said Yoon Sung-hyun.

Newtopia revolves around a soldier Lee Jae-yoon, played by Park Jung-min and his long-distance girlfriend, Kang Yeong-ju aka Jisoo. They struggle to survive in a post-apocalyptic world where zombies have taken over Seoul. Newtopia is based on the novel Influenza. The series marks Yoon Sung-hyun’s debut in the OTT space.

Newtopia will arrive on Prime Video on February 7.
