Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L. Murugan said that the Narendra Modi-led BJP government was safeguarding the Indian constitution and honouring the contributions of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar to the nation, while the Congress showed disrespect to the architect of the Indian constitution.
Addressing the gathering in a programme organised by Citizen for Social Justice as part of the Samvidhana Sanman Abhiyana in Shivamogga on Thursday, the Minister said that during the Congress rule, the Indian Constitution was amended multiple times for the selfish needs of party leaders. “However, during Modi’s rule, we amended the Constitution in the interest of the nation,” he said.
He accused the Congress of neglecting the contributions of Ambedkar to the country. The Congress leaders, including Jawaharlal Nehru, worked hard to defeat Ambedkar in the election. “The Congress party did not give due respect to Ambedkar when he passed away. The government in power then was not even ready to bear the expenses of carrying Ambedkar’s mortal remains to Mumbai”, he said.
BJP State President B.Y. Vijayendra said that the Congress leaders twisted the statement of Union Minister Amit Shah to create a controversy. “The BJP is committed to safeguarding the Constitution and honouring Dr. Ambedkar. A diverse country like India is united, and its people are together because of the constitution,” he added.
Lok Sabha member B.Y. Raghavendra said that the BJP would oppose untouchability and support reservation. “Our party is committed to the abolition of untouchability and supports reservation. Whoever speaks against this cannot be a member of our party,” he added.
BJP legislators S.N. Channabasappa, Araga Jnanendra, Dhananjay Sarji, D.S. Arun, former Minister Hartal Halappa, former MLAs Ashok Naik, K.G. Kumaraswamy, and others participated in the programme.
