The Secunderabad Railway Police on Friday arrested members of two gangs transporting dry ganja from Vishakhapatnam to Chennai, and Odisha to Surat respectively via Secunderabad. In the two cases, the officials seized 20.88 kilograms of dry ganja, valued over ₹5.2 lakh.
In the first case, Aslam S, 27, an electrician from Kancheepuram in Chennai was arrested with 12.29 kilograms of the contraband worth ₹3.07 lakh while his friend Mani, a resident of Alandur, escaped.
Investigation revealed that Aslam agreed to assist Mani in transporting ganja for a new mobile phone. On January 22, the duo travelled to Visakhapatnam and got 12 kilograms of contraband from an unknown supplier. Since there was no direct train to Chennai, they boarded Visakha Express to Secunderabad.
Meanwhile, Odisha-based duo – Mithun Sethi, 33, and Pandav Naik, 60, were arrested while transporting 8.59 kilograms of dry ganja worth ₹2.14 lakh to Surat, Gujarat. Efforts are underway to trace their accomplice Rabindra Dakua, a resident of Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh.
According to the police, Sethi worked in a cloth manufacturing company in Surat and had returned to his native village Rugumu for his wife’s delivery, while Naik worked as a labourer in the same village. The duo facing financial crisis was reached out by Dakua who offered them ₹5,000 each for transporting three packets of ganja to Surat.
After receiving the packets, the duo boarded Konark Express from Brahmapur to Dadar. On Friday morning, when the train reached Secunderabad, they were arrested and the contraband seized.
