Meghan Markle’s latest Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, has stirred controversy, with critics and even her estranged half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., slamming her for portraying herself as having a modest upbringing. The Duchess of Sussex’s new cooking and lifestyle show premiered on Tuesday, where she opened up about her childhood and shared her love for home hosting.
In the series, the Suits alum, 43, referred to herself as a “latchkey kid” and claimed she “grew up with a lot of fast food and TV tray dinners.” Meghan recalled meals from El Pollo Loco, Taco Bell, and Jack In The Box, reiterating an earlier claim from 2021 that she “grew up on the $4.99 salad bar at Sizzler.”
However, her estranged half-brother wasn’t convinced. Speaking to TalkTV, Thomas Jr. dismissed Meghan’s claims as fabricated. “That’s just another one of the malarkey stories she sold to the royal family for sympathy,” he said. “We weren’t poor. She didn’t have to rub two nickels together at Sizzler’s salad bar.”
Taking further digs at Meghan, Thomas Jr. added, “The entire world knows how she treated her family, especially her father, who gave her everything. That’s why nobody’s buying it.” He also admitted that while he initially tuned in to watch the series, he soon “realized there’s something better I could be doing with my time.”
Critics, particularly from the British press, have been equally unimpressed. Katie Rosseinsky of The Independent gave the series a dismal one-star rating, calling it “queasy and exhausting.” She noted that the show “strains for aspiration and relatability in a way that never gels.”
Journalist Kristine Froeba was even harsher in her review on X (formerly Twitter), mocking Meghan’s attempts at homemaking. “Meghan Markle’s latest narcissist Netflix fiasco begins with faux beekeeping, faux gardening, and faux cooking… She has no clue how to chop garlic, and her pasta dish is revolting nonsense.”
Despite the backlash, Meghan’s show has generated significant buzz, with supporters praising her for embracing a relatable and down-to-earth approach. Whether audiences will ultimately embrace With Love, Meghan or dismiss it as another PR attempt remains to be seen.
