A 40-year-old man allegedly strangled his 32-year-old wife to death before ending his life in front of his six-year-old son over a domestic row at their house in Byadarahalli on Wednesday.

The deceased were identified as Suresh V., a factory employee, and his wife Mamata G, a garment worker. The couple had two sons , police officials said.

“At the time of the incident, the couple’s six-year-old child was at home, while the 13-year-old child had gone with his grandparents,” officials added.

The Byadarahalli police have registered a case of murder and suicide.

According to the police, the six-year-old boy called his maternal grandmother, Rukmini, and informed her that Mamata was not speaking and asked her to come quickly. Rukmini, who is also the complainant and lives close to the deceased’s house, arrived shortly to find the child near the window.

She then opened the door of the house with her key and entered inside and found Mamata in a room unconscious on the diwan. In the other room, which was locked, they found Suresh dead . Police suspect that Suresh first strangled Mamata either using a bedsheet or a pillow and then killed self.

Investigations revealed that the two were married for 14 years and had lived in this house for two months. They previously stayed with Suresh’s parents in Bhadravathi in Shivamogga.

Rukmini alleged that Suresh was currently unemployed and didn’t pay the rent or take care of the family and frequently picked fights with Mamata.

“Despite being advised by the elders, Suresh continued his behaviour,” the complainant told the police. “On February 24, Suresh’s father had advised him. Suresh left home that night and returned on February 26, and then the incident occurred.”
