The Virugambakkam police have arrested a man on charges of assaulting his wife with an empty gas cylinder on Tuesday (January 21, 2025). The arrest was made after the intervention of senior police officials, following the woman’s allegation that she was forced to run from one police station to another to lodge a complaint against her husband.
A senior official of the city police said the accused Krishnakumar, who lived with his wife Suganthi and their two sons at AVM Avenue of Virugambakkam, is an alcoholic. Suganthi, the sole breadwinner of their family, works at a bakery in the locality.
The official said Krishnakumar would often abuse and assault his wife after consuming alcohol. On January 15, Krishnakumar came home drunk and abused her, and when she retaliated, he attacked her with an empty gas cylinder. She sustained a serious injury to her left eye and suffered a broken tooth.
Suganthi’s father, after admitting her to the Chromepet Government Hospital, visited the Virugambakkam police station to lodge a complaint. The officials at the station, however, refused to take the complaint, stating it pertains to a crime against a woman, and directed him to the All Women Police Station.
Later, when Suganthi went to the Vadapalani All Women Police Station to file the complaint, she was asked to go to the Law and Order Police Station, stating it was a domestic issue.
Following this, Suganthi filed a complaint with the Chennai Police Commissioner’s Office.
Based on the orders of City Police Commissioner A. Arun, a case was registered at the Virugambakkam police station under two sections, including those under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. The Virugambakkam police then arrested Krishnakumar.
