A single government order is sufficient to make Malayalam the language of the lower courts and in legal studies, former High Court judge M.R. Hariharan Nair has said.
He was delivering the keynote address at the inauguration of International Mother Language Day celebrations organised by the Malayala Aikya Vedi and the Mizhavu Malayalam Club at Government Law College here on Friday.
Mr. Hariharan Nair said Section 137 of the Code of Civil Procedure, Section 307 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Article 348 of the Constitution were favourable for realising this objective.
Proceedings in lower courts in other States were held in their respective languages, he said.
He also shared the experience of issuing orders and conducting procedures in Malayalam when he was ombudsman for local self-government institutions.
Poet V. Madhusoodanan Nair inaugurated the celebrations being organised by the Malayala Aikya Vedi in the district till February 28. He reminded the gathering that mother language was everything for a people.
College Principal Bindumol V.C. presided.
