The All Traders Association Kumbakonam has placed a set of demands before Union Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna with a plea to implement them immediately.

In a memorandum to the Minister, association secretary V. Sathya Narayanan said the redevelopment of the Kumbakonam Railway Station should be implemented immediately. Although the foundation stone for the redevelopment project was laid by the Prime Minister one year ago, the work had not commenced yet.

With the ‘Mahamaham’ festival at Kumbakonam to be held in March 2028, the Centre should immediately implement the project as the festival attracts devotees in huge numbers.

Track doubling

The association appealed to the Minister to implement the track doubling project in the mainline section from Villupuram to Thanjavur via Kumbakonam.

It sought laying of a new line in the Kumbakonam-Jayamkondam-Vriddhachalam stretch — a proposal which had been pending for long.  Despite completion of feasibility studies and project evaluations, the proposal was awaiting approval from the Railway Board, Mr. Sathya Narayanan said.
