Imagine coming home to find that a stranger has not only invaded your personal space but has made themselves remarkably comfortable, snacking in your kitchen, taking a shower and rummaging through your belongings. For Kid Cudi, this bizarre nightmare became a reality earlier this January when an intruder reportedly broke into his Los Angeles residence. The individual, described by the rapper as a “crazed fan,” was eventually apprehended by L.A. County Sheriff’s deputies, but the experience left a mark on Cudi. What made matters worse was seeing people on social media making jokes about the situation.

Taking to Instagram Stories and X on January 23, the Ohio-born artist addressed the incident and the hurtful jokes circulating online. He began by calling out the trolls and providing a clearer picture of the unsettling ordeal.

“I see the internet running with things and making jokes this s*** is not funny. The person who broke into my house was a crazed fan who had been stalking me for years without me knowing. He’s been to shows, events I’ve done in the States and overseas,” he wrote.

This wasn’t just an ordinary break-in. As Cudi explained, the man had gone to extreme lengths to get to him, driving across the country in hopes of sharing ideas and pitching collaborations. But what he did after breaking in crossed all boundaries of privacy.

“He rummaged through personal things, my fiancee’s stuff, took a shower and ate, all while thinking he was gonna have a conversation with me. This was an unhinged 34-year-old man,” Cudi shared.

Adding to his frustration was the incorrect assumption by some online that the intruder was homeless. Cudi firmly shut down that speculation while emphasising how this violation of his privacy has made him rethink his safety measures moving forward.

“There is nothing funny about this. My privacy was violated, and now I have to protect myself. I don’t feel safe now,” he wrote.

The Grammy-winning artist also warned that this experience may affect how he interacts with fans in public. “If I’m standoffish when you see me in public now, this is why,” he admitted.

Thankfully, Cudi was not at home during the break-in. According to TMZ, he was already dealing with another crisis earlier in the month when he had to evacuate his L.A. home due to the ongoing wildfires. Despite the chaos, he reassured fans that he, his loved ones and his dogs were safe.

“Hey guys, had to evacuate my crib. I’m safe, with my loved ones, dogs are safe. For all the folk who lost their homes and people who are dealing with this, my heart hurts for you and I’m praying for us all. I send ALL my love to you and yours. If you have to evacuate, get out immediately. Don’t hesitate. Be safe LA. Love you guys,” he wrote in an Instagram Story at the time, informs Billboard.

For Kid Cudi, the focus now is on reclaiming his sense of safety and finding peace after the series of unsettling events.
