On Sridevi’s death anniversary, Khushi Kapoor opens up about missing her mother during her big-screen debut with Loveyapa.
Seven years have passed since the untimely demise of Sridevi, one of Indian cinema’s most cherished icons, who left the world on February 24, 2018. On her death anniversary, her younger daughter, actor Khushi Kapoor, reflected on her mother’s enduring legacy and how much she missed her during her own big-screen debut. “My mom gave her all to acting, starting when she was barely four,” Khushi shared in a recent interview.
In a conversation with Hindustan Times, Khushi emphasized her mother’s dedication to her craft, having started her acting journey as a child. The 24-year-old actress also spoke about how both she and her sister, Janhvi Kapoor, take immense pride in their mother’s legacy, saying, “She will always hold an irreplaceable place in our lives.”
Khushi, who recently debuted on the big screen with Loveyapa, revealed that the moment she saw herself in theaters, her thoughts immediately turned to her mother. “I wish she was there to see it. Her presence would have made it complete,” she admitted.
Addressing the inevitable comparisons with Sridevi, Khushi humbly noted that matching her mother’s brilliance was impossible. “Even in a hundred years, I couldn’t be like her. She was truly one of a kind,” she said, acknowledging her mother’s unique stature in the industry.
Recalling a cherished memory, Khushi shared, “I remember traveling with her to New York for English Vinglish (2012). There was a dance sequence in a chiffon saree, and she was freezing. But she performed flawlessly, without a single complaint. That’s how much she loved her craft.”
Sridevi’s legacy remains unparalleled, with timeless performances in classics like Chandni, Mr. India, Lamhe, ChaalBaaz, and Sadma. Her final lead role in Mom (2017) earned her a posthumous National Film Award for Best Actress. She also made a brief appearance in Zero (2018), released after her passing.
While the world continues to celebrate Sridevi’s contributions to cinema, Khushi Kapoor is carving her own path. After her debut in Zoya Akhtar’s The Archies, she starred alongside Junaid Khan in Loveyapa. Up next, she will feature opposite Ibrahim Ali Khan in Nadaaniyan, set to premiere on Netflix on March 7, 2025.
