Borewell contractors in the State have urged the government to regulate unlicensed agencies from other States engaged in borewell digging. They said these agencies compromised the quality of work and materials used in borewells. The contractors also pointed out that the government was losing significant revenue in taxes.

The Government Registered Borewell Contractors Association demanded here on Thursday (February 6) that the State government introduce legislation to regulate such agencies operating in the State.

There are reportedly 689 licensed borewell agencies in the State, but an equal number of unlicensed operators are also active. Palakkad and Thrissur districts have the highest number of such unregulated firms.

In Malappuram, 55 licensed operators are functioning. “The unlicensed agencies use low-quality pipes and other materials, which is why they charge lower rates,” said E.K.T. Ahamed Ameer, general secretary of the association.

He said the government had remained inactive despite repeated complaints. “By not acting against such unlicensed agencies, the government is also losing revenue. A law to regulate them is urgently needed,” said Mr. Ameer.
