The 97th Academy Awards will take place on March 3 (IST). Considered as one of the most prestigious award ceremonies in the world, the Academy, every year, recognises artists and films from around the world and honours them with the prestigious golden trophy. This year, the Oscars will take place at the Dolby Theatre in California. Ahead of the same, here’s a look at seven Hollywood luminaries with the most number of Oscars in several acting categories.

Actor Katharine Hepburn is the only actor credited with the most number of Oscars. She got her first Oscar in 1934 for her role in Morning Glory. She won her second Oscar, 35 years after first one. It was for Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner in 1968, and The Lion in Winter in 1969. She won her fourth and last Oscar for the film, On Golden Pond. Surprisingly, while many actors consider the golden trophy their ultimate victory in acting, Hepburn refused almost all of her Oscars. “As for me, prizes are nothing. My prize is my work,” she once said.

Hepburn is followed by Daniel Day-Lewis, who won three Oscars in his lifetime. His first came in 1989 for My Left Foot Was Much Loved. His next nods were for There Will Be Blood in 2008 and Lincoln in 2013.

Frances McDormand also won three Oscars. She won three Best Actress awards for Fargo, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and Nomadland.

Ingrid Bergman and Jack Nicholson won three Oscars each. While Bergman was recognised for Gaslight, Anastasia Nikolaevna and Murder on the Orient Express, Nicholson was felicitated for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, As Good as it Gets and Terms of Endearment.

Meryl Streep holds a record for earning 21 Oscar nominations. She received her first Oscar recognition as a supporting actress for Kramer vs Kramer in 1979, followed by Best Actress awards for Sophie’s Choice in 1983 and The Iron Lady in 2012.

Walter Brennan received his first Oscar in 1936 for his role in Come and Get It. He was also honoured twice after, for Kentucky (1938) and The Westerner (1940).
