Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan are one of the most prominent and respected couples in Bollywood. The couple’s love story started when they began dating when Jaya was a superstar and Amitabh was trying to establish himself in Bollywood. They have often opened up about their love story and during an appearance on Simi Garewal’s show, revealed whether it was love at first sight for them.
When Simi Garewal asked if the “cliche” of love at first sight could be applied to the couple, Jaya Bachchan blushed and said, “I think so.” Jaya smiled and looked at Amitabh coyly. However, Amitabh had a different opinion. He said, “No. Love at first sight is a connotation that has been so badly abused in spoken word and written word that you know, it has lost its meaning. So we don’t want to be put in that category.” Jaya Bachchan looked serious as Amitabh said this, not smiling anymore.

For the unversed, although Amitabh and Jaya had plans to get married in October 1973, they tied the knot on June 3 of the same year to be able to travel to London together. Jaya Bachchan revealed that they decided to get married seven days before the trip. They tied the knot one day before they had to jet off to London.
Amitabh and Jaya made a pact with the team of Zanjeer that if the film succeeds, they would travel to London and celebrate. However, Amitabh Bachchan’s father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, was not on board with them travelling for a holiday before they got married.
Speaking with Komal Nahta in an old interview, Amitabh Bachchan revealed that he had informed his father about their travel plans and he refused to permit them to travel before their marriage. As a result, Amitabh and his family quickly organised an intimate wedding ceremony the next day and he got married to Jaya. “So quickly we got everything organised and the next day we got married and Pandit ji ko paisa thamaya and bola ‘Jaldi kardo, flight ka time ho raha hai’,” he said.
Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan have been married for 51 years now. They have two children, daughter Shweta Bachchan and son, Abhishek Bachchan.
