Janmam lands: T.N. govt. decides to move Supreme Court

The Tamil Nadu government has decided to move an interlocutory application in the Supreme Court seeking to vacate the interim stay preventing creation of basic amenities in janmam lands in Gudalur in the Nilgiris district.

The State government has also decided to seek permission from the apex court to hear cases involving the Tamil Nadu Gudalur Janmam Estates (Abolition and Conversion into Ryotwari) Act, 1969 separately from other cases.

During a meeting Chief Minister M.K. Stalin chaired in the Secretariat in Chennai on Thursday, he instructed officials to continue resuming janmam lands to the tune of 34,986 acres, the lease period of which had got completed.

The CM also instructed officials to take steps towards ensuring basic amenities in land parcels classified as ‘Section 17 lands’ of the 1979 Act, where people have been living for a long period. Minister K. Ponmudy, Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam and senior officials were also present.
