Halakki folk artist Padmashri Sukrajji is no more

Folk artist and Padmashri recipient Sukri Bommagowda (88), also known for anti-liquor protest, breathed her last at her residence in Badageri village of Ankola taluk in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka on February 13.

Better known as Sukrajji, she was not well for the past few months and recently returned home after receiving treatment at a private hospital in Mangaluru. Having recovered a bit, she had spent the day chatting with her kith and kin on February 12. She breathed her last during the wee hours of February 13, family sources said.

Sukrajji was known for singing Halakki folk songs. She had launched a movement against the liquor menace in her village.

She had received several awards, including Nadoja award in 2006. In 2017, she was honoured with the Padmashri award by the Union Government.
