Guwahati, Assam’s principal city, will host a meeting of the Chief Information Commissioners of the country on Tuesday (April 8, 2025) .
A statement from the National Federation of Information Commissions of India (NFICI) said the meeting of its 14th annual general body and 32nd Board of Governors would focus on better coordination among the Central and State Information Commissions.
Heeralal Samariya, the Chief Information Commissioner of the Central Information Commission, is the president of the NFICI, which was formed in September 2009. The other members of its Board of Governors are represented from Bihar, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, Maharashtra, Manipur, and Odisha.
“The basic objective of the NFICI is to facilitate coordination and mutual consultation among the Central and State Information Commissions, exchange information on laws and their interpretation, landmark judgments, collect, compile, and analyse relevant information relating to the implementation of the Right to Information Act, 2005,” the NFICI stated.
It said the federation also strives to take up appropriate issues of importance with the government, promote uses of information technologies or tools, and encourage initiatives in matters related to transparency and accountability in governance.
The Guwahati meeting of the NFICI will be held under the leadership of Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, a retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and Assam’s Chief Information Commissioner.
