“Several leaders are recalling the contribution of Mahatma Gandhi and his principles, as they are badly needed to lead the society today more than ever,” Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha said in Belagavi on January 21, 2025. He was speaking after unveiling the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in front of the Suvarna Soudha.
“Gandhiji’s ideals not only led the freedom movement in the past, but they continue to guide us to this day. He was not only a leader of the fight against the British, he also led a social and cultural revolution. His ideals continue to inspire us,” he said.
He congratulated the government of Karnataka for the programme. “Organising the Gandhi Bharata programme and installing the Gandhi statue in front of the Suvarna Soudha is a matter of pride not only for Belagavi or Karnataka, but the whole country,” he said.
Mr. Kharge said that he and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi had recently met veteran sculptor Ram Sutar regarding installation of a Gandhi statue in Noida. “She selected a statue of Gandhiji with two children walking beside him. It has the words ‘My life is my message’ etched below. A similar statue will be installed in Kalaburagi,” he said.
