BJP Tamil Nadu president K. Annamalai on Thursday urged the State government to form a committee to take steps for waiving off farm loans of small and marginal farmers.

“The DMK made fake poll promises to the poor to capture power. However, after coming to power, it failed to fulfil its promises. In the last four years of the DMK government, people of Tamil Nadu have been facing several issues including unemployment, poor maintenance of law and order situation, illegal sale of drugs, crimes against women and members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes,” Mr. Annamalai alleged in a statement.

“The DMK promised farm loan waiver in its 2021 election manifesto. However, it has not waived farm loans in the last four years and betrayed farmers.” The total farm loan outstanding of agriculture cooperative credit societies as of March 31, 2024 was only ₹19,008 crore. The total loan disbursement was ₹ 35,852 crore between May 2021 and December 2023. This clearly shows that despite facing natural calamities, small and marginal farmers have repaid their loans to a larger extent, he added.
