Emraan Hashmi’s latest Instagram teaser has fans speculating about Awarapan 2.
The trend of re-releasing Bollywood films is gaining momentum, with movies like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Bareilly Ki Barfi, and Sanam Teri Kasam drawing audiences back to cinemas. Sanam Teri Kasam has even managed to surpass its original lifetime collection within days of its re-release. Now, amid this revival of old classics, speculation is rife about the return of Jannat (2008) and Awarapan (2007), two of Emraan Hashmi’s most beloved films. Adding fuel to the fire, Hashmi recently shared an animated teaser that has left fans wondering if Awarapan 2 is on the horizon.
Taking to Instagram on Friday, Emraan Hashmi posted an animated clip featuring his iconic character from Awarapan, standing with a pigeon in a cage, looking over a sunset-drenched cityscape. His unmistakable voiceover played in the background: “Maine maut ko bohot kareeb se dekha hai. Kisi aur ke zindagi ke liye marna hi meri zindagi hai.” As the melancholic notes of Toh Phir Aao followed, the teaser cut to a bloodied hand gripping a gun. Hashmi captioned the post simply: “Jummah Mubarak 🕊️.”
Fans instantly flooded the comment section, speculating whether this was a hint at Awarapan 2. Comments like “Awarapan 2!”, “The lord of Bollywood Emraan Hashmi is back”, and “Awarapan 2 release kab hogi?” took over social media, amplifying the anticipation.
Meanwhile, producer Mukesh Bhatt addressed the growing chatter about the re-release of Awarapan and Jannat. Speaking to News18 Showsha, he acknowledged the rising demand but refrained from confirming anything. “Oh my god! I have been hearing this from everywhere. Yes, people have been approaching me about this. But I believe in giving the audience what they truly want. The demand for re-releasing these movies is strong, and I will discuss it with my team before making any decision.”
Emraan Hashmi also reflected on Awarapan’s unexpected rise to cult status over the years. “It wasn’t a big success in 2007, but today, it’s my most loved film. Over 20 years, it has gained immense respect. This shows that films can find success over time.”
Released in 2007, Awarapan was an intense action-drama directed by Mohit Suri and produced by Mukesh Bhatt. The film followed Shivam Pandit, played by Hashmi, a hitman working for a Hong Kong-based gangster, Malik (Ashutosh Rana). Shivam was tasked with keeping an eye on Reema (Shriya Saran), a woman held captive by Malik. But when he discovered her desperate desire to escape and reunite with her lover, he found himself at a moral crossroads. Defying Malik’s orders, he chose to help Reema, triggering a deadly confrontation that ultimately led to his redemption.
While the film struggled at the box office upon its release, Awarapan gradually gained recognition for its gripping storyline, powerful performances, and soul-stirring soundtrack, featuring hits like Toh Phir Aao and Tera Mera Rishta. Over the years, it has evolved into one of Emraan Hashmi’s most respected works, often cited as his finest performance.
With nostalgia-fueled re-releases becoming a trend, the growing fan demand for Awarapan’s return to theaters—or even a sequel—raises the question: will the cult classic finally get the resurgence it deserves?
