Disqualification petitions filed against 4 Manipur NPP legislators

Manipur Congress vice-president Hareshwar Goshwami on Monday (January 27, 2025) filed disqualification petitions against four MLAs of the National People’s Party (NPP).

The petitions were filed at the Speaker’s Tribunal of the 60-member Manipur Assembly.

“A disqualification each was filed against the four NPP legislators for extending support to the BJP-led government in Manipur despite the NPP’s national president Conrad K. Sangma and the parent unit of the party withdrawing support,” N. Bupenda Meitei, a High Court of Manipur advocate told presspersons on behalf of Mr. Goshwami.

Mr. Sangma is also the Chief Minister of Meghalaya.

The four NPP legislators are – Mayanglambam Rameshwar Singh representing the Kakching constituency, Thongam Shanti Singh (Moirang seat), Irengbam Nalini Devi (Oinam), and Janghemlung Panmei (Tamenglong).

Citing a Supreme Court directive to decide disqualification petitions within three months of the date of filing, Mr. Meitei hoped the Speaker, Thokchom Satyabrata Singh would dispose of the disqualification petitions expeditiously.

The NPP won six seats in the 2022 Assembly elections. The party withdrew support from the Nongthombam Biren Singh government in November 2024 due to the failure to resolve the crisis arising out of the ethnic conflict in Manipur since May 2023.
