At the 97th Academy Awards, Conan O’Brien kicked off the ceremony with a humorous monologue about the importance of dressing appropriately for such a prestigious event. As he scanned the audience, he spotted Adam Sandler, who was dressed casually in a blue hoodie, basketball shorts, white socks and sneakers. Now, the host has revealed that the funny moment was actually Sandler’s idea. Initially, Conan had a different plan about their banter, but the Grown Ups star suggested he should wear his signature loose clothes instead of the usual tuxedo.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Conan explained, “I wrote an idea for Sandler. Adam and I are old friends. I called him up and he liked the idea and then he said, ‘I have another idea.’ It involved him dressing in the way that he’s most comfortable, which of course was his idea because he doesn’t want to put on a tuxedo. Then his idea was so great and that was all Adam. Adam’s the king. The audience was really good and I’m very happy and I’m never happy.”

During the Oscars, as Conan O’Brien spoke about dressing up for the occasion, he couldn’t help but call out Adam Sandler’s casual attire—a hoodie and shorts—asking, “Adam, what are you wearing?”

The actor responded, “Nobody even thought about what I was wearing, you brought it up. Know what Conon, I like the way I look you, because I’m a good person. I don’t care about what I wear or what I don’t wear. Did my snazzy gym shorts and fluffy sweatshirt offend you so much that you had to mock me in front of my peers.”

Adam Sandler didn’t take kindly to Conan O’Brien’s mockery and, visibly unimpressed, stood up and began to leave. The audience felt uneasy, but Sandler quickly reassured them, saying they weren’t to blame—this was all on Conan. O’Brien attempted to apologise, but Sandler had already made up his mind. Before walking out, he lightened the mood by inviting the audience to join him for a basketball game at Veteran Park. Just before exiting, he stopped by Timothee Chalamet, placed his hands on his shoulders, and hilariously called out his name, leaving the crowd in splits.

Meanwhile, at the 97th Academy Awards, Sean Baker made history by winning four awards in a single night for Anora, while Mikey Madison took home the Best Actress trophy. Despite leading with 13 nominations, Emilia Pérez secured only two wins. The Brutalist, which had ten nominations, claimed three awards, including Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Actor.
